Talk Title: “The plastics we breathe.”
Plastic has revolutionized the world, and we are surrounded by it. From pacifiers to food wrapping and the clothes we wear, it is difficult to escape.
Recently plastics have been found in human tissues, and there is a push to determine what the health effects may be. Current methods of detection are not easily replicated and are not readily quantifiable. We need to develop tools for detection and quantification that are generalizable for researchers and clinicians. This will require transdisciplinary teams with passion and commitment for future generations.
Rajeev Dhupar, MD, is the Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Wake Forest University and the Assistant Vice President for Research and Education in the Surgical Services Division at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System. He is a practicing thoracic surgeon with a clinical focus on lung cancer and other diseases of the chest. His research is focused on toxic respiratory exposures and potential long-term effects for breathing and cancer susceptibility.
